AND A tool that could change our way of seeing and living the city arrived in Bologna. Is called “Gender atlas for a feminist city“And, far from being a simple book, it is a real map to orient themselves in a city, seen through the eyes of those who are often not considered in urban planning. The project, created by the Municipality of Bologna, together with the associations Period Think Tank And Sex & The Cityinstead wants to tell, how The genre deeply influences the way each of us lives urban spaces.

The genre atlas for a feminist city

Have we ever wondered how our city experience changes depending on whether we are men or women? Or how do the city live people with different gender identities? The Atlas does this: illuminates angles of urban life which too often remain in the shade. With a mix of concrete data and colored maps, the volume shows how the city spaces, are used differently and as certain inequalities require specific interventions. It is not just about denouncing problems, but of imagining solutions.

The keys to open the city

The Atlas explores Bologna through six essential themes who touch everyone’s daily life:

  • as we feel safe (or insecure) walking on the streets
  • How we move through the city
  • how we access health services with different needs
  • how we find a house and new ways of living
  • Who is remembered in the names of roads and public places
  • How to face complex realities such as sex work

Through the gender atlas, Bologna explores new ways of designing a more inclusive and respectful city of gender identities (www.sexandthecity.space/)

Data that tell stories

The real strength of the volume It is its ability to transform numbers and statistics into understandable stories. By separating the data by gender, realities that otherwise remain invisible, offering public administrators concrete tools to make more informed decisions. This approach can make the city more livable for everyone, positively influencing urban planning, transport, health and social policies.

A compass to orient themselves in the city

One of the most innovative aspects of the book is its ability to bring together information that are usually scattered among a thousand different offices. The result, It is both a practical guide to services available for women and gender subjectivity, is a tool to critically reflect on the city. The creation of the Atlas involved public and private bodies in a dialogue that identified the most urgent areas on which to intervene. For example, in a country where 74% of domestic work and unpaid care still burns on women, the goal is not to help them support this weight, but completely rethinking cities, services and infrastructures.

Beyond fear: who is Bologna really?

The Atlas tackles a theme that many prefer to ignore: that feeling of vulnerability that many women and people with different gender identities experience In public spaces, especially in the evening and at night. The project asks fundamental questions: for whom the city was built? Who can really live it freely? Who is welcomed and who rejected? Bologna, with its tradition of social innovation, It thus becomes an ideal laboratory to explore how the genre intertwines with other variables Like the economic condition, age, origin and disability.

A map for the future

The Atlas does not arise from nothing, but is part of a path that began in 2021 with the adhesion of the Municipality to the #datipercort campaign. Since then the Gender budget, The first thematic maps and the “Towards a gender atlas” projectwhich has shown how precious the dialogue between institutions and civil society is. Even if it does not face every aspect possible, the volume represents, however, a solid base to continue observing, studying and transforming the city. Themes like care, mobility, safety and representation They remain central to build more and more accessible places to all the people who live in it.
