Fur coats, leopards and the Sopranos: The ‘Mob Wife’ trend

2024 is still young, but a fashion trend is already emerging on the social network TikTok that is a counterpoint to the subtle ‘Quiet Luxury’ trend shapes. After the US drama series ‘Succession’, which inspired the discreet ‘stealth wealth’ look, another television series is now responsible for the increasingly popular ‘Mob Wife’ aesthetic.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the US series ‘The Sopranos’, HBO has set up an official TikTok account for the famous mafia family, which shows short summaries of all 86 episodes. Not only does this provide nostalgic appeal for fans of the cult series, but it introduces Carmela Soprano, Adriana La Cerva and other female series characters with their long nails, fur coats, catsuits, animal prints and lavish gold jewelry to a new audience. FashionUnited has put together the most important style elements of the trend.

The fur coat

An impressive fur coat is the basis of every ‘mafia bride’s look. In keeping with the times, this should be either vintage or made from faux fur. There are numerous shapes and styles to choose from, including the ‘oversized’ cut, models in natural colors, with a belt, in maxi length or with a leopard print.

Animal prints

‘Mafia brides’ love leopard and other animal prints – especially when they are combined with each other. The Danish fashion label Rotate showed the way at its FW23 show: Designers Thora Valdimars and Jeanette Friis Madsen dressed US actress Lisa Rinna from the reality TV series ‘The Real Housewives’ in a faux fur coat with a leopard print that is in a A slightly modified version was found in the lining.

With their Sicilian roots, Dolce & Gabbana are the forefathers of the ‘Mob Wife’ trend. For SS24, the label sent a water-repellent leopard-print trench coat and matching headscarf onto the runway.
