Full moon and supermoon summer 2023: when, the dates

TOJune is here and the new month also promises very well as far as celestial shows are concerned.

Without too long to wait, in fact, already this Sunday 4 June you can admire the sixth full moon of 2023which comes a month after the one in May during which a penumbral lunar eclipse had also occurred, not very visible from Italy.

The

June full moon, still a little wait

It’s about the so-called full moon, the phase of the Moon in which the lunar hemisphere illuminated by the sun is entirely visible from the Earth. At that moment the Moon is in opposition to the Sun.

An average of 29 days, 12 hours and 44 minutes pass between two moments of a full moon, an interval of time called the lunar month. Moreover 2023 is a particular year for full moonsbecause in the month of August there will be two full moons, the 1st of the month and the last of the month.

But after a month and the Supermoon is back

But that’s not all: in about a month, just long enough for the Moon to realign its position with the Sun and the Earth again, and here comes again on July 3 a splendid “Supermoon”, the biggest and brightest of the yearwhich will lead the way to a series of others, all on dates between the summer and the beginning of autumn: August 1st, August 31st and September 29th.

What time does the Super Moon appear?

The term “Supermoon” is not scientific since the exact definition of the moment of the Moon’s closest approach to the Earth is called “lunar perigee”, but it is used to indicate a Moon that is in a Full Moon condition and at the same time transits a minimum distance from the Earth, or about 356 thousand km. And they are very rare coincidences during the year.

To observe the July one, no particular indications will be needed, except to hope for a clear sky. The Moon will be visible in the sky at 100% of its brightness at 13.40. The next one, as anticipated, will instead be scheduled for Tuesday 1 August at 20.33.
