Fulham’s Mitrovic ahead of league record: More goals than five Championship teams

A goal is missing

Leaders Fulham FC will play their 30th game of the Championship season on Saturday. This means that Aleksandar Mitrovic, with his brilliant goal tally, would still have a comfortable 17 rounds to set a new goal record in England’s second division – and one more game could be enough for the 27-year-old Serb.

Goals & highlights from Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic

After 27 championship appearances in the current season, Mitrovic has already scored 30 goals. The current best value in the league, which started in 2004, is 31 goals and is not even a year old. On the 46th and final day of the pre-season, he was set up by Ivan Toney, who managed to get promoted to the Premier League with Brentford.

So Mitrovic only has to snap one more time to level the mark and score just one more hit for the sole record number. On Saturday (4 p.m.) Fulham will face Hull City.

With his 30 goals so far, Mitrovic has an unprecedented rate – in no other league from one of the other top 5 countries does a player come close to the value of Mitrovic’s 1.11 stalls per game. Simon Terodde from FC Schalke 04 has scored an average of 0.88 goals per game in the 2nd Bundesliga so far and is in second place behind Mitrovic in this regard. In the top 10, places three (ex-Paderborner Sven Michel), five (St. Pauli’s Guido Burgstaller) and seven (Robert Glatzel, HSV) are currently occupied by players or former players from German second division clubs.

“I think Aleksandar Mitrovic has probably scored more goals than half of the teams in the Championship,” said Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola recently, out of necessity, appreciative words for the striker, who faced the reigning English champions in the FA Cup with Fulham. There are currently five teams that have not scored as often as Mitrovic alone. Mitrovic did not score in the 4-1 defeat of the “Cottagers” from London against City, but he did in the league. Fulham have won five of their last six games, twice with six and once with seven goals. Mitrovic alone has scored eight goals in five championship games since the start of the year and is a ten-goal lead in the top scorers list and eight points in third place with two games down in the table.
