Fugitive mafia boss arrested at abandoned church in Genoa | Abroad

An arrest warrant was issued against Bonavota in November 2018 for murder and participation in a criminal organization. He was arrested in the northwestern city of Genoa on Thursday. According to local media, that happened when he left a cathedral. He would have had a counterfeit ID card with him.

Bonavota, together with two brothers, headed a branch of the ‘Ndrangheta that operated from the municipality of Sant’Onofrio, but would also be active in Rome and the northern regions of Piedmont and Liguria. According to the judiciary, Bonavota took “the most important decisions” together with other leaders of the ‘Ndrangheta and dealt with “the interests of the organization in the Rome area and the gambling sector and drug trafficking”.

Originally from Calabria, the ‘Ndrangheta are considered the most powerful of the Italian mafia organizations, which are also very active in the rest of the world. Members of the ‘Ndrangheta have also been arrested in our country in recent years.

At the beginning of this year, the most wanted Mafia boss in Italy was arrested: Matteo Messina Denaro. He would be the big boss of the Sicilian Cosa Nostra and had been on the run since 1993.
