Mathias Gidsel von den Füchsen Berlin has again been elected the best handball player in the world. In the interview, the Dane talks about the award, his contract extension and the title fight in the Bundesliga.

RBB | 24: Mathias Gidsel, they were from fans, trainers and experts For the second time in a row to the world handball player chosen – by a large distance. What did you think when you got this message?

Mathias Gidsel: Of course it makes me proud. To be elected to the best handball player in the world two times in a row is incredible. Last year I was a bit surprised, this year I was particularly proud to have reached it twice in a row. I know how much I work every day and how my family supports me.

Some people from Brazil even come to Berlin to see them play here. What does that mean to you? Is that additional pressure?

Of course that’s pressure. But I don’t find it that difficult. Even if people come to Berlin from Brazil, the gate is the same for me – it doesn’t get smaller or bigger. The field is the same. Whenever I go to the field, I become another person. The adrenaline comes, I love this feeling. I am grateful for supporting me so many people.

It’s not easy to get the best. A lot comes together: lots of pressure, media and so on. This is a lot for a young person. The support that I always get is incredible. Not only in the Max-Schmeling-Halle, also in Erlangen, all over Germany. It means a lot to me that the Germans support a stupid Danes like me. (laughs)

They are particularly closely defended on the plate, often doubled by the opponents. But they do not hold back. How much pain do you actually have to endure?

It doesn’t feel like pain on the field. The adrenaline takes the pain. I am also only 26 years old, my body can withstand a lot. Maybe a few more problems will be added later. After the games, however, it is a big task to recover and keep your body fresh. This is a lot of work for us in everyday life – if the viewers don’t watch. But I enjoy what I do every day. I love getting up every day with the knowledge that I play handball.

Foxes player Mathias Gidsel again elected world handball player

Exceptional men Mathias Gidsel has been chosen to the best handball player in the world for the second time. The Dane of the Foxes recently dominated not only on the very large international stage, but also arouses new title hopes in Berlin.more

They have already emphasized the special handball culture in Germany. Recently you have yours Treaty with the Füchsen extended by 2029. You could probably play for every top club in the world. Why do you stay in Berlin?

I feel really comfortable here. There have been many reasons to extend my contract with the foxes. We are on a really good way. You just have to look at this season. We still have all options. The chances are good for us, in the final four of the Champions League to move in.

It is incredibly cool to be part of this development. I always said in my whole life that I play because I want to improve every day. Of course I also had ways to switch abroad. And even if Germany is abroad for me, I feel at home here. So it was important to me to stay here.

The Foxes Berlin have never been German champions in their club history. It is the big goal this season too-and you with your team are currently the leaders of the handball Bundesliga. What do you think how likely the title win is?

The first way is the best way to become German champions. The title race is crazy this year. I think that has not yet existed in the history of the Bundesliga that it is so tight and five teams can become champions. Our team is good enough. The most important thing is that we have it in our own hands.

Thank you for the conversation!
