FSV Mainz want to extend with home-grown Barreiro

After the 100th Bundesliga game

After the 1-0 (1-0) win against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, FSV Mainz 05 is hoping for an early contract extension with the winning goalscorer Leandro Barreiro. “Leo came up to us from his own youth, has settled in and is becoming more and more important in the center. This is a player we have on common ground and with whom we want to extend,” said sporting director Martin Schmidt on Saturday.

The contract of the 23-year-old, who played his 100th Bundesliga game against Hoffenheim, expires in the summer of 2024. The midfielder has been part of the Rheinhessen starting line-up since the 15th matchday and impresses with his solid performances on the pitch. “He underlined in the second half of the season that he is very important for us at the moment,” said Schmidt, adding: “He fought for the place through his performance and can hardly be pushed out now.”

Head coach Bo Svensson, under whose aegis the homegrown player played by far the most games of his young career, appreciates Barreiro’s current consistency. “He is very good for the team and the club,” said the Dane. The Luxembourg international has scored twice in the last three Bundesliga games and set his personal record of the season in the top flight with two goals. Barreiro did not want to think about a possible contract extension after the win against Hoffenheim. “Today I’m focusing on the win and the nice experience. Everything else is scheduled for when,” he said.
