English football champion Keira Walsh is moving from Manchester City to FC Barcelona. The Catalans transfer a world record fee for the midfielder.
FC Barcelona are also investing in their women’s team and have signed English football champion Keira Walsh. The Catalans announced this on Wednesday evening (September 7th, 2022). Various media reports of a transfer fee of between 400 and 500,000 euros – a new world record transfer fee in women’s football.
She replaces the previous record holder Pernille Harder. The Danish national player is said to have cost up to 350,000 euros when she was transferred from VfL Wolfsburg to Chelsea two years ago. Like her national team colleague Lucy Bronze, Walsh is moving to Barca from top English club Manchester City.
Harder was happy to give up the record: “It’s good for women’s football that the money is rolling in”, she said. Walsh is to replace world footballer Alexia Putellas in Barcelona, who tore a cruciate ligament shortly before the European Championship.
Keira Walsh was voted player of the match in the Lionesses’ final triumph over Germany (2-1 aet). The 25-year-old midfielder played her 50th international match on Tuesday at the end of the World Cup qualifier against Luxembourg (10-0).
