THEthe December 14th will be a date to mark on the calendar for those who often travel to Milan and between Milan and Liguria. In fact, with the new winter timetable of Trenord, the company that manages almost all regional and suburban trains in Lombardy, comes a series of changes that will make it easier to move in and out of the city. Among these, several connections between Milan and Genoa stand out, the new possibility of reaching Linate airport directly from the Superba And a new stop near CityLife. But let’s go in order.

Malpensa closest to CityLife

One of the most visible innovations for those who move around the city concerns the Malpensa Express train that connects the city to the international airport. Until now the service made only one intermediate stop, in Bovisa; from 14 December it adds a new urban stop: Domodossola Fiera. The stop is important because from here, in a few minutes on foot, you reach CityLifeone of the busiest neighborhoods in modern Milan, and you can easily take the M5 metro. It means that those arriving from the airport will be able to reach it more comfortably areas such as Tre Torri, San Siro, Corso Sempione and the Arco della Pace. And not only that: the timetables have been made more regular, with departures from Cadorna at minutes 26 and 56.

For the first time Genoa arrives at Linate

The second big news concerns those leaving or arriving from Liguria. With the new timetable, the Genoa–Milan regional trains also begin to stop in Milan Forlaniniwhere the new M4 metro passes. This simple change allows something that was not possible until now: reach Linate airport directly from Genoachanging only the vehicle but without unnecessary deviations. The M4 takes just a few minutes to get to the terminalwith only one intermediate stop. And for frequent flyers, it’s a huge improvement.

More trains on the Milan–Genoa line

The connection between the two cities does not only gain access to Linate. In fact, from 14 December the line will be upgraded: 30 trains a day, almost double than before; a train every hour, all day; first departures at dawn and last trips until 10pm. In practice, reaching Milan becomes easier at any time of the day. Some routes reach Greco Pirelli, a useful stop for changing to suburban trains, while connections via Lambrate, Rogoredo and Centrale also remain active.

The great Third Crossing project: what it really means

The large construction site that will be the backdrop to all these innovations is that of Third Giovi Pass, the infrastructure destined to change the connections between Liguria and the Po Valley forever. The new line, in fact, will cross the Apennines with a 27 kilometer tunnel, destined to become the longest in Italy. This is not just an engineering feat, but a key piece in the future will allow passenger trains to travel faster. The works are progressing and, according to the latest forecasts, the construction of the main structures should be completed in 2027.

When will you get from Milan to Genoa in less than an hour?

One of the most awaited promises concerns the future journey in 56 minutes between Milan and Genoa. A real goal, but not an immediate one. In addition to the Third Crossing, in fact, other sections must be completed. Some are under construction, others in the authorization phase. The estimated date, in any case, to have the line fully operational is 2030. Until then, the service will still be improved step by step.

A new transport map in the North West

In short, December 14th is an important date and not just a time change: it is the day that marks the beginning of a new phase of mobility between Milan and Liguria. CityLife becomes reachable directly from Malpensa, Linate connects to trains from Genoa, Milan–Genoa doubles the number of racesthe Third Crossing continues to take shape. A puzzle of interventions which, put together, will change the way we move between cities, airports and the sea.
