Frank Lampard: Wolverhampton signing Cunha was too expensive for Everton

High fee despite zero goals

Forward Matheus Cunha (23) has scored zero goals in 17 games for Atlético Madrid this season, mostly as a substitute. Wolverhampton Wanderers were not deterred by this and made the Brazilian’s signing official on Sunday evening: Cunha comes on loan with a mandatory purchase and is expected to cost between 45 million and 50 million euros. Everton coach Frank Lampard would also have liked to sign the ex-Hertha player, but it was too expensive.

“It’s a sign of where Wolves are and where we’re not at the moment,” said Lampard of the “Times“ quoted – he didn’t mean the table region, but the financial strength. The Toffees take on Wolverhampton on Boxing Day.

“We had him on the list, he’s a really interesting player but the number was big and Wolves, to be honest, made the decision to grab him. Everyone has to work in different parameters and it wasn’t a parameter that we could work in,” said the ex-pro about the Cunha transfer, which will take place on January 1st.

The game will be a basement duel because Everton is 17th in the table. and the Wolves even bring up the rear. “If you look at the history of the league, clubs that spend a lot of money tend to do really well,” Lampard said. The “toffees” were, if you will, the exception to the rule in the recent past.

Everton ahead of Bayern
Transfer spending since 2013To overview
Since 2013, the Liverpool club has invested €822m in 86 new players, allowing themselves a transfer deficit of €351m. For comparison: FC Bayern has since paid 803 million euros for its arrivals and generated a transfer minus of 329 million euros. Thanks to the largest investments outside of the “Big Six”, a place in the middle of the Premier League jumped out on average.

“Budgets are different, so what can I control, what can we control? The team spirit. Do we need reinforcements at the top? Yes, and we’re aware of that,” Lampard said. In January, Everton wanted to strengthen the squad with “loans and purchases”.
