Gorizia, 22 December. (askanews) – Inside the GO! 2025, Nova Gorica – Gorizia European Capital of Culture, inaugurates on November 29th at the Santa Chiara Museum in Gorizia the new exhibition Franco Basaglia, where the eyes could not reach, photographic project curated by Marco Minuz who wants to remember the figure of Franco Basaglia and the its relationship with the city of Gorizia, at the time the capital of a cultural revolution of international importance, through the work of three extraordinary photographers who witnessed this historic moment.
“Franco Basaglia, where the eyes could not reach”: the photos of Scianna and Berengo Gardin in Gorizia
Three authors of the caliber of Gianni Berengo Gardin (1930 – 2025), Raymond Depardon (1942) and Ferdinando Scianna (1943) are brought together in a project that aims, through their photographs, to give complete meaning to Basaglia’s extraordinary intuition and the transformation it initiated. These internationally renowned photographers wanted to witness, firsthand, the commitment of this psychiatrist who had started an experimental program in the city of Gorizia, a path that then led to the reform of the mental health system with law n.180 of 1978, the so-called “Basaglia Law”.
An exhibition which deliberately, even in the choice of identified author’s photographs, not only wants to tell Basaglia’s experience from a professional point of view, but also to suggest the visionary nature that animated it. To delve deeper into this experience, the three photographers were interviewed for the occasion, thus offering an extraordinary interpretation of that historical moment.
The documentary on the flight that Basaglia made his patients experience
Precisely to also highlight the poetic aspect of this transformation, the journey will end, after the three sections dedicated to photographers, with the documentary “il Volo”, made by Silvano Agosti in 1975; film showing Basaglia’s idea of giving his patients the experience of flying for the first time.

Bringing these three authors together represents a historic event in the field of photography. The itinerary consists of approximately 80 photographs, three video interviews created for the occasion and the video documentary by Silvano Agosti.
The project is promoted by the Municipality of Gorizia, with the contribution of the Ministry of Culture (Mic) and the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia through the central Culture and Sport directorate, and is organized by Suazes.
