In the Netherlands we have almost forgotten that clothing can also be repaired instead of thrown away. Fortunately, that is slowly changing. A new sustainable initiative from Amsterdam plays a key role in this. United Repair Center takes the recovery of broken clothing out of your hands for large clothing brands.
The experienced tailors who are working here often come from abroad. That is no coincidence, explains founder Thami Schweigler: “We need people and knowledge. It no longer exists in the Netherlands.” An additional advantage for the tailors is that they can use their talent and experience again. “That is also a circular economy,” laughs Schweigler.
Sniffing in Obdam
At the end of the episode, Francis still wanders around in the shed of ‘The Rommelparadijs’ in Obdam. In the 1970s founded by the Lekx brothers, sons of a qualified ragman. Everything is consciously criss -crossed here, so you really feel that you can discover something special that everyone has overlooked. Such as a drawing of the old Amsterdam, not noted by anyone except by a bird, that has left his own souvenir on it.
