France raises retirement age to 64? Trade unions are already announcing demonstrations | Abroad

The legal retirement age in France is currently 62 years. But during his election campaign, President Emmanuel Macron made it clear that he wants to reform the pension system further, raising the retirement age to 65. That reform has been heralded as one of the key projects of Macron’s second term as president.

Tomorrow Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne will explain the pension plans. Reportedly, the statutory retirement age would be raised from 62 to 64, not the previously envisaged 65.

The unions intend to vigorously oppose the pension reform. “If Emmanuel Macron wants to make this the mother of his reforms (…) it will become the mother of all battles for us,” said Frédéric Souillot of the FO (Force Ouvrière), who, together with the other trade unions and a large part of the opposition opposed the reform.
