The European Commission today approved the creation of the European Digital Infrastructure Consortium (EDIC) Digital Community Goods. The consortium is a collaboration between France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands and focuses on strengthening European digital sovereignty by developing a strong digital infrastructure within Europe.

European cooperation on digital autonomy

The participating countries work closely with European companies and knowledge institutions on digital community goods: open and transparent alternatives for digital services such as artificial intelligence, cloud computingcybersecurity and social networks that are jointly developed and managed. By sharing knowledge, resources and contacts, the development of European technology should be accelerated.

State Secretary Eddie van Marum: “80% of our digital technology and infrastructure still comes from non-European countries. This can and must be changed. We are working on more digital sovereignty, together with our European partners and the European business community. That is why I am pleased that the European Commission has today approved the establishment of this partnership.”

Supporting existing initiatives

The EDIC Digital Community Goods will coordinate and support existing European initiatives. This is done, among other things, through technical and legal assistance and help with fundraising. A central location will also be set up – both physically and online – where projects can go for help.

The main objectives of the EDIC are:

  • Strengthening the European digital ecosystem through collaboration between public, private, academic and technical parties;
  • Developing a sustainable financing model for production, maintenance and use of digital community goods;
  • Encouraging the use of these community goods by governments, companies and citizens.

Art de Blaauw, director of CIO Rijk and chairman of the EDIC: “With the EDIC In Digital Community Goods, we join forces and scale up joint European solutions. In this way, we ensure that governments throughout Europe receive the resources to become truly digitally independent.”

Member States concerned

In addition to the 4 founding Member States, Luxembourg, Slovenia and Poland are involved EDIC immediately observer status. Several other EU member states have indicated that they want to join.

The official launch of the consortium will take place on Thursday, December 11 in The Hague.
