Michal Karbownik was almost branded a bad investment by Fortuna Düsseldorf, now the 21-year-old is on Poland’s provisional World Cup list. Only two brief appearances were granted to him up to the 7th match day, followed by an appearance in the regional league reserve. Since then, the picture has changed radically: Karbownik, who can be used flexibly in defense and in midfield, is a left-back and has prepared four goals in seven games.

“Let’s praise him. The ball he played on Peterson before the 2-0 was world class. Dribble inwards and then see the path – strong,” said coach Daniel Thioune (quoted via “Kicker”) after the 2-0 win at Karlsruher SC last Sunday. Karbownik had played well four days earlier in the DFB Cup against Jahn Regensburg (3-0). Together, the Pole was even instrumental in all five goals in the two games.

“We will also work on the small construction sites that we still have with him,” Thioune followed his praise. For the time being, this will only last until the end of the season, Karbownik is on loan from Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion. However, the purchase option is “not easy to finance from petty cash”, as sports director Klaus Allofs said at the “Rheinische Post‘ hinted at. In the event of promotion, Fortuna is currently in sixth place, but the sum should be able to be raised, which should be far below the 5.5 million euros paid by Brighton to Legia Warsaw in 2020.

“I’m glad we have such an all-purpose weapon,” said Thioune (quoted via “picture“) before the duel against Holstein Kiel (Saturday, 1:00 p.m.). “He can play in midfield, he will definitely show up there. I have my doubts as to whether that will be the case this weekend.” The reason for this is the renewed absence of left-back Nicolas Gavory (27). The Frenchman suffered a severe tendon injury in his thigh in the final training session before the KSC game and has been out for months.

“He had a successful operation and survived the operation well. I wrote to him last night. It’s all uphill from now on. We hope that he will be back in a timely manner, although we assume that he will not be available to us for many weeks,” explained Thioune. Until the long winter break, Karbownik, who was still one of the biggest losers in market value in the interim September update, should therefore continue to be challenged on the left side of defense – and can collect further arguments for an upgrade (discuss in the market value analysis).
