What is the most beautiful fortress in the Netherlands? You can vote: 88 forts in the Netherlands are competing for the title and Fort Kijkduin in Huisduinen is one of the frontrunners.
“The prize is ‘the honour’”, says Audrey Satoer, manager of Stichting Erfgoed Den Helder. “It would be a great honor for us if we achieved the top 5 of all the beautiful forts in the Netherlands. We aim for the number 1 position, but the competition is fierce.”
The competition is organized by magazine Fort! Magazine, part of Stichting Liniebreed Ondernemen. This foundation is committed to the preservation of fortresses throughout the Netherlands. In Den Helder and Huisduinen, a total of four forts are participating in the competition: in addition to Fort Kijkduin, these are Fort Erfprins, Fort Harssens and Fort Westoever. There are 34 North Holland forts in the list.
You can now vote for about a week and in that time Fort Kijkduin has already managed to gain a considerable lead over most other forts. “We immediately started promoting within our network, on social media, but we also have an announcement here at the counter. Visitors from the area in particular like to cast their votes, the reactions are very positive.”
The result is visible: Fort Kijkduin is currently in 4th place with more than 400 votes, and is one of the 6 forts with more than 300 votes.
The first round of voting closes on July 1. A top 5 then remains, which can then be voted on.
