Formula 1 exit for Alfa Romeo “not sure yet”

The Formula 1 partnership between Alfa Romeo and Sauber will end at the end of the coming season. Since 2018, the Italian car manufacturer has acted as the team’s title sponsor. Whether Alfa Romeo has a future in the premier class is currently open.

Jean Philippe Imparato, CEO of Alfa Romeo, and Cristiano Fiorio, Chief Strategy Officer, told “RacingNews365” that a farewell to the premier class of motorsport is not yet set in stone: “We are not yet sure whether we will follow Formula 1 be left this season.”

“We won’t make a decision about it until the end of June. Now we’re actually still talking about an empty book as far as the future is concerned. That can still be filled out completely,” continued Imparato.

US market very important for Alfa Romeo

Accordingly, one wants to look at all options before making a decision. It’s in Alfa Romeo’s DNA to be present in motorsport.

But Imparato also admitted that there are some factors that could prevent further engagement for the time being: “Right now everything is on the table for 2024 and of course everyone knows that we do not live in an easy world at the moment. There is a lot to do, inflation, war, regulations.”

The team therefore wants to make the most of the coming season and, above all, improve marketing in the USA: “We have three races there in three different cities and states. Consequently, you also have to be specific in this market. Miami, for example, is a very important GP for us as nearly 20% of our sales in America are in Florida.”

Goal for 2023? Confirm performance from 2022!

The goal for 2023 has already been set. It should be sixth in the constructors’ championship. This would confirm the team’s placement from last year.

In total, during the partnership with Alfa Romeo, Sauber has collected 181 points since 2018. A place on the podium has not jumped out of the cooperation so far.
