“For me, getting dressed is a symbolic act”

Haukio has three central principles when it comes to dressing for representative duties.

Jenni Haukio says in her recent book that she got Sauli Niinistön at the beginning of the first presidential term, a memorandum instructing the spouse on how to dress.

For example, regarding the dress code for a dark suit, the spouse’s instructions are quite detailed:

Uniform festive jacket suit, elegant, light jacket-dress combination, elegant, light trouser suit, shoulder scarf or shawl as needed, light open-toed shoes, small leather bag matched to the color of the outfit and shoes, sophisticated materials also in accessories, short evening dress for evening events after 18:00; knee-length or below the knee, usually not open-necked or completely sleeveless, accessories according to the color and style of the suit, or alternatively a suit made of a refined thin material such as a suit made of silk, a dress or a two-piece skirt-party jacket combination, which is solid in color or patterned, in bright colors depending on the season and the nature of the occasion completely black.

You also have to take into account the country and culture in which you live. In the most detailed national dress codes in the world, the colors of the suit, the shape of the neckline, the length of the sleeves and hem, and the quality of the material of the suit can be regulated.

Wearing any badges of honor also imposes conditions on the outfits.

– I had come to the honorary position of the president’s spouse from my fairly ordinary job as a communications manager, and the fact was that in the spring of 2012 I had almost nothing ready for the selection of clothes required for official events.

– In any case, everything had to be acquired at the beginning, and partly still on a fairly quick schedule. For example, the first state visit loomed ahead of the inauguration only weeks away, and I wanted to follow the given instructions as conscientiously as possible, Haukio recalls in his book.

From the beginning, Haukio has had three key principles in dressing for the president’s spouse’s representative duties: compliance with protocol dress codes and etiquette, preference for Finnish design and planning, and restraint in personal style.

– To me, dressing up not only means a certain kind of clothing, but is also a symbolic act and as such a part of the culture of behavior, respecting the theme of the occasion and its hosts, Haukio sums up his style.
