He was one of the most popular footballers in Germany. Now the DFB honorary captain has died.
Soccer legend Uwe Seeler is dead. The honorary captain of the German national team died on Thursday at the age of 85, as his former club Hamburger SV confirmed, citing the Seelers family. The “Bild” newspaper reported about it first.
In the recent past, Seeler has repeatedly struggled with health problems. A few months ago, the legendary HSV professional fell in his house in Norderstedt. Two years ago, an artificial hip joint was put in after another fall.
HSV’s greatest idol
Seeler wore the HSV jersey from 1946 to 1972 and resisted all financial temptations from other European countries. The Hanseatic city made “Us Uwe” an honorary citizen in 2003. A bronze statue of his foot was erected in his honor at Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion.
From 1954 to 1970, Seeler played 72 international matches and scored 43 goals. The attacker was part of four World Cups. In 1966 he led the German team as captain to the Vice World Cup in England. After his career, Seeler was appointed honorary captain.
