Fábio Deivson Lopes Maciel already noticed at the club World Cup. At 44 he was by far the oldest player. Now he has set another record.

Fábio had a special evening in the Maracanã Stadium: The 44-year-old goalkeeper from Fluminense Rio de Janeiro was on the pitch in the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana against América de Cali (2-0). He wrote football history. His club reported that he exceeded the previous world record of England’s goalkeeper legend Peter Silton.

“It is official: Fábio is the player with the most football games in history,” said Fluminense on the platform X and provided the message with the hashtag #fabio1391. In keeping with the anniversary, the goalkeeper stayed in the Maracanã without a goal.

There are different information about the exact number of Shilton’s operations. The Guinness Book leads him with 1,390 games, while Shilton himself speaks of 1,387 competitive games. With its current value, according to club details, Fábio is now in front of the Englishman.

After the game, the Brazilian addressed emotional words to his family and friends: he was grateful for everyone at his side and try to be a good person. He wanted to enjoy the record, but not overestimate. “The most important thing is to help my teammates,” he emphasized.

His contract with the traditional club Fluminense runs until December 2026, so that he can further expand his brand. Fábio gave his professional debut in 1997, since then he has only played in Brazil – among others for Vasco da Gama and Cruzeiro. He was never nominated for the A national team, even if he won some titles in youth teams of Seleção.
