Eleven years ago, the battle of the superstars brought in record amounts. Now there should be a rematch.

It was a world sporting event that took place on May 2, 2015 at the boxing arena of the MGM Garden Hotel in Las Vegas. Two of the best boxers in the world faced each other in the ring. The American Mayweather, one of the smartest defensive specialists in his sport. And the Filipino Pacquiao, who was once considered the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world, a pugilist with exceptional skills and an impressive fight record across eight different weight classes.

The American won the spectacle on points. In terms of sport, the “fight of the century” could not live up to what the enormous media whirlwind had previously promised. Pacquiao later made it public that he was severely limited in the ring due to a shoulder injury. The injury was so serious that he required surgery after the fight and was unable to fight for twelve months.

Now the aging boxing legends want to know it again. Eleven years after their encounter in the gambling metropolis in the Nevada desert, the streaming service Netflix announced on Monday that a new edition would be broadcast from the Sphere in Las Vegas on September 19th.

“I’ve already fought Manny and beaten him,” Mayweather said. “The result will be the same.” The American recently announced that he would resume his professional career after a planned exhibition fight against Mike Tyson. The 48-year-old, former world champion in several weight classes, is undefeated in 50 professional fights.

The now 47-year-old Pacquiao returned to sport last year, four years after his retirement in 2021. “The fans have waited long enough,” said the Filipino folk hero. “They deserve this rematch. I want Floyd to forever haunt the one defeat of his career – and to always remember who inflicted it on him.”

Mayweather, who turns 49 on Tuesday, was nicknamed “Money” and was once the highest-earning athlete in the world. His last fight to date took place in 2017 against UFC star Conor McGregor, and he has been fighting in exhibition fights since then. His duel with former heavyweight world champion Tyson (59) is scheduled for April.
