Florian Wirtz (from) celebrates his second goal in the game against Switzerland

As of: April 25, 2026 • 7:26 p.m

After Ragnar Ache’s landslide victory (70 percent of the vote) in February, Florian Wirtz also left the competition far behind in March. 140,000 football fans voted for his spectacular long-range shot in the German national team’s game against Switzerland and voted the goal their goal of the month with well over 50 percent of all votes. David Tomic from the Stuttgarter Kickers (18 percent) and Noel Eichinger from Jahn Regensburg (11 percent) came in far behind in second and third place.

Anyone who fundamentally doubted Florian Wirtz’s ability to achieve great things given Florian Wirtz’s mixed first season in the Premier League should watch a recording of the international football match against Switzerland. Wirtz shows in this game what an incredible footballer he is. The midfielder, who was 22 at the time, played an almost perfect game on this gala evening in March 2026. He scored two goals himself and prepared two more in the narrow 4-3 victory over the Swiss.

“You have to be glad you have him”

“You have to be really happy about the kind of player you have there”the Swiss Granit Xhaka whispered almost reverently into the sports show microphone after the game. “Looking back, it was an honor to have stood next to him at Leverkusen.” These weren’t the only words of appreciation that evening. His national team colleagues were also full of praise and the international press celebrated Wirtz as an “outstanding man” who had demonstrated his “world class”.

The goal of the month came in the 61st minute after a corner for the Germans. Serge Gnabry takes it briefly and kicks the ball to Wirtz. He gets a surprising amount of space and time from the Swiss defense. In this situation, all eleven Swiss players are actually in front of the ball in their own 16. But even before two Swiss players hesitantly set out to attack the Liverpool star, he calmly presented the ball to himself and shot it from a good 17 meters. Then everyone just watches the ball as it hits the top right corner following an elegant trajectory.

“I’ve never been able to put my stamp on a game for Germany,” said Wirtz after the game. “It was my best game and my best goal for Germany.”

Already the third TdM for Wirtz

It’s hard to believe, but this is already the third goal of the month for the young Wirtz, who could set out to shake up the upper echelons of the TdM player rankings. At this point, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Mario Basler and Klaus Fischer are tied for third place with six goals, Jürgen Klinsmann is in second place with seven goals and Lukas Podolski is at the top with 13 goals for the month. If things continue like this and Wirtz scores one TdM per year, he would have to play until 32 to catch up with Podolski. That seems possible.

Wirtz’s first two goals of the month

Wirtz form at the World Cup

Wirtz is one, or perhaps even the central player in the DFB team for the World Cup in the summer in the USA, Mexico and Canada. If he is anywhere near the form he showed in the game against Switzerland, German football fans can dream – although perhaps not directly of the title, but of similarly exhilarating games and a good performance by the German team – and perhaps also of a new goal of the month here at the Sportschau.
