Flood risk in large parts of England due to storm Henk | Abroad

England is still suffering from storm Henk. 240 flood warnings are in force across England. Hundreds of people have been evacuated due to the risk of flooding, the BBC reports.

Railway lines and roads are under water, causing major traffic disruptions. A dike broke in East London, forcing about fifty people to be moved to safety. Floodwaters have burst the banks of the River Trent in Nottinghamshire. Hundreds of homes and other buildings were damaged.

According to the British Environment Agency, in addition to the current rainfall, the risk of flooding is all the greater due to the recent wet weather. The ground is “oversaturated,” said Caroline Douglass, the agency’s flood office lead. “The water has nowhere to go anymore.” According to the Environment Agency, there will be heavy rainfall and a risk of flooding over the next five days.
