Flick hopes for a “fresh start” from the new DFB president

Dortmund (dpa) – National soccer coach Hansi Flick hopes that the future DFB president will create a spirit of optimism in the association. “I hope there will be a new beginning,” said the 57-year-old on ARD.

The German Football Association (DFB) is moving within Frankfurt this year from the previous headquarters in the Otto-Fleck-Schneise to the modern academy with numerous football pitches. “It’s a departure. And of course we would also like the new president to initiate and push a spirit of optimism for the entire association, for all of German football.”

It would “do everyone good if you got positive news (from the association) again,” said the former DFB sports director Flick. A new president will be elected in the DFB next Friday. The delegates at the Bundestag in Bonn have the choice between Bernd Neuendorf (60), who is supported by influential amateur football, and the long-time DFL official and former Schalke CFO Peter Peters (59), who is considered a candidate for professional football. The rather unknown Neuendorf is considered the favorite because of the voting ratios. He has been President of the Middle Rhine Football Association since mid-2019.

The crisis-ridden DFB hopes that the reorganization after the resignation of Fritz Keller (64) almost a year ago will bring significantly more calm to the top management. Flick did not say in the ARD “Sportschau” on Sunday evening which of the candidates he would like to lead the association.
