Javier Fernández: A Journey Through Struggles and Triumphs
At the training camp of 1. FC Nürnberg in Gais/Südtirol, 19-year-old Javier Fernández shares his compelling story with SPORT1. After facing a series of injuries that tested both his physical and mental limits, Fernández is now on a new path, armed with hope and determination.
The Trials of Injury
Fernández’s journey has been fraught with challenges. He reflects on his experiences: “It was certainly a very tough time. Every player hates being in such a situation. I suffered injury after injury.” Initially, he was excited when Vincent Kompany included him in Bayern Munich’s first-team preparations at just 17 years old. Training alongside stars like Harry Kane and Joshua Kimmich, his debut seemed imminent, but a succession of injuries marked the beginning of a painful phase in his career.
After battling back from an ankle injury he sustained in the summer of 2024, just when full recovery felt within reach, an unexpected blow struck: a severe meniscus injury. This setback pushed Fernández into another round of surgeries and rehabilitation, extending his period of suffering. “I was basically injured for a year. It was a truly hard time, but it helped me evolve,” he acknowledges.
The Support of Bayern Munich
Despite these difficulties, Fernández emphasizes the crucial support he received from Bayern Munich. “Communication was always there. They helped me a lot, including arranging my knee surgery in Spain. Even during rehabilitation, they were there for me, and I am very grateful for that,” he explains.
This unwavering support ignited a sense of motivation within him. By January 2026, things began to turn around. He extended his contract with Bayern until 2028 and was loaned to 1. FC Nürnberg, where he could finally showcase his skills in real match situations.
A Fresh Start at Nürnberg
In his new role, Fernández began to flourish. He participated in eight matches by the end of last season, starting five times. Under the guidance of head coach Miroslav Klose, his technical skills and physicality were evident, showcasing the talent that Bayern recognized.
The decision to extend his loan for another season was influenced by Klose, who, despite not having played in Fernández’s position, provided invaluable insights based on his experience. “He has not played in my position, but he can teach me a lot through his experience,” Fernández remarks.
Goals for the Upcoming Season
Looking ahead, Fernández is focused on maintaining his fitness and continuing his development. “The most important thing is to stay fit. I want to improve, give my best in each game, and show what I can do,” he states. The first opportunity to put his plans into action appears on August 9, when 1. FC Nürnberg faces Dynamo Dresden in the opening match of the new second-division season.
Javier Fernández has taken significant steps since his time at Bayern Munich. With his roots firmly planted in Germany, he appreciates the culture and people, even humorously noting, “The weather is a bit too cold for me.”
