Flexibility and tackle: how Musah plays and why he bewitched Milan

The US midfielder is the last piece of the puzzle. Loftus-Cheek right, Reijnders between and him left. Raised in Castelfranco Veneto, he also owes a lot to Gattuso

The last piece of the Piolian puzzle was born in New York, raised between Italy and England and finally exploded in Spain, between Gattuso’s slaps and a “Swiss” mentality, precise, by those who preside over the midfield with their heads held high. Milan likes him for this.

WILD

Yunus Musah, Valencia’s fighting and governing midfielder, is the last target of the upper floors to launch the three-way midfielder: Loftus-Cheek on the right, Reijnders in the middle and him on the left, just like in La Liga. Although Musah has often proved to be a useful joker, a lockpick to unhinge the opposing defenses. Gattuso has always had him play as a left midfielder in a three-man midfield – the same role he would play at the Rossoneri -, but at times he has also played as a right winger. A different role for sure, a thread away from his characteristics.

Meanwhile, some numbers. Musah comes from the best year of his career. He played as a starter in Valencia, took part in the World Cup with the United States and ended up in Milan’s sights. An embrace to the past: Yunus lived for about ten years in Castelfranco Veneto. Before leaving for England he played for Giorgione, splitting himself between goal and midfield. There are several photos of him wearing boxing gloves. Better in between though. In 2012 he moved to London with his parents, then Arsenal took him. And the rest is what we see today: a solid and concrete midfielder who maybe doesn’t steal the eye, doesn’t score, doesn’t produce the decisive assist, but gives balance and is in any case fundamental. Musah must be analyzed with data, almost “unpacked”. Last year he played in 37 games, churned out a couple game-winning passes and had at least 6 tackles per game. His heat map requires a reflection: the “red zone” is found above all on the right side of the field, but also in the middle. Manifesto of a flexibility that will come in handy for Pioli. The agreement with the player has been found, only the handshake between Milan and Valencia is missing. It’s almost there now. The Rossoneri puzzle is almost over.
