Darren Fletcher (41) played 342 games for Manchester United, won the Premier League five times and the Champions League once. The former midfielder has been working as U18 coach for the Red Devils since this summer, and now his sons Jack Fletcher (18) and Tyler Fletcher (18) are causing a stir. The twins differ when it comes to choosing for the national team.
In the absence of the injured Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes, both Jack and Tyler were in the squad for Man United’s 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Friday evening. Jack, who made his debut in the 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa the previous week, came on as a substitute for Mason Mount in the 46th minute. “I think Jack Fletcher did a very good job and that’s why when we have this opportunity we have to give guys like Jack and the others space,” said Rúben Amorim after the game. Tyler remained on the bench for 90 minutes in his squad debut.
The twins were born on March 19, 2007 in Manchester. They were trained at, of all places, Man United’s local rivals Manchester City. In the summer of 2023, the Red Devils paid the Citizens 1.5 million euros for the services of the Fletcher brothers, who will mainly play for the U21s this season. Jack is an attacking midfielder, Tyler is a bit more defensively oriented.
Jack Fletcher wins brother duel
Darren Fletcher wore the Scottish national team jersey 81 times during his career. As Jack and Tyler were born in Manchester, they can play for England or Scotland. Jack played three times for Scotland in the U16s, but has since been a permanent fixture in England’s youth ranks. Tyler, in turn, played for England in the U16s and then decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and play for the Brave Hearts. They are now part of the U19 national teams.
In November there was a duel between the Fletcher brothers. Scotland and England met in qualifying for the U19 European Championships. Tyler led the Scottish team onto the pitch as captain, while Jack had to take a seat on the bench. England won the game 4-0 and Jack scored the Three Lions’ fourth goal.
