The winner of the top game in the handball Bundesliga comes from Flensburg. The SG is the new league leader.

SG Flensburg-Handewitt won a thrilling northern derby and took the lead in the handball Bundesliga. In the 113th duel against THW Kiel, the SG prevailed in front of their home crowd with 36:34 (16:19). A strong second half paved the way for coach Aleš Pajovič’s team to win against the previous leaders.

While Flensburg remains unbeaten and now has 14 points from eight games, Kiel suffered its first defeat of the season and is just behind with 13 points. SC Magdeburg, which currently has 11 points, is also still undefeated – although it has played two fewer games.

Flensburg goalkeeper Kevin Möller, who played a strong game, said on ARD that this success meant a lot to the team – especially after the difficult start to the season. However, one must “continue to work with humility and hard work”.

Even before the game, THW managing director Viktor Szilágyi had emphasized that the league lead was a nice snapshot, “but the standings and everything that happened before are always irrelevant in this special game.” SG coach Pajovič had a similar sentiment: “I haven’t even bothered with the table yet, the season is still so long.”

The game itself featured two different halves. Flensburg initially got off to a better start before Kiel became more dominant and went into the break with a three-goal lead. In the second half, however, the hosts took command. In the hall, which was sold out with 6,300 fans, they turned the game in their favor.
