First world title ever at 3,000 meters for skater Irene Schouten

Skater Irene Schouten has become world champion in the 3,000 meters for the first time in her career. The reigning Olympic champion was the fastest at the World Championship distances in Calgary with 3.57.10.

The silver went to Isabelle Weidemann from Canada in 3.58.01 and the bronze to Martina Sablikova from the Czech Republic with 3.58.33.

European champion Marijke Groenewoud finished fourth with 3.59.81. Elisa Dul achieved 4.06.54, good for eleventh place.

Schouten previously won World Championship gold twice in the mass start and in the 5000 meters. She is the Olympic champion in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters and in the mass start.
