Visitors are enthusiastic about the first liberation festival in their district. “Thank you for celebrating it here now,” says one. The other person not only finds it fun, but also important. “It’s a Dutch tradition and that’s how we become more involved as people with a different background,” says someone. Another visitor: “For us ‘freedom’ also has a different meaning, so extra nice that we can celebrate it here on Anton de Komplein.”
Relay run
The runners arrived from Wageningen around 11 am. Last night the relay run started in the city where the Germans officially surrendered. The liberation fire was taken to different cities with torches; In Amsterdam it is therefore the first time that the fire was subsequently lit in Southeast. Vincent de Kom – the great -grandson of Anton de Kom – got the honor.
