First Grand Slam title! Coco Gauff wins US Open

The American Coco Gauff celebrated the greatest success of her young career at the US Open and secured her first Grand Slam title.

In the final in New York, the 19-year-old crowd favorite beat upcoming world number one Aryna Sabalenka in a hard-fought final 2:6, 6:3, 6:2.

Gauff, who will rise to third in the world rankings thanks to her success in front of over 23,000 enthusiastic fans at Arthur Ashe Stadium, won her first major title in the second final. She is the first homegrown winner in New York since 2017, when Sloane Stephens triumphed.

Meanwhile, the reigning Australian Open champion Sabalenka still has to wait for her second Grand Slam title, but will still replace Poland’s Iga Swiatek as the leader of the WTA rankings on Monday.

After 2:08 hours, Gauff converted her first match point after starting the game poorly. Only in the second round did the teenager lose her nervousness and steadily improve. Towards the end of the game, Gauff showed her best side and gave Sabalenka no chance.
