A catering point with a canopy was destroyed by fire this evening at Camping Emmen in Schoonebeek. The owner of an adjacent home discovered the fire around 9:15 p.m., when he had just showered and saw the building on fire outside. No one was injured.
Firefighting teams from the fire brigades from Schoonebeek, Emmen and Klazienaveen were called to extinguish the fire. That turned out to be quite a challenge, because the strong wind caused the flames to flare up. Ultimately, the fire brigade was unable to prevent both the catering building and the roof from being considered lost.
Research must reveal the cause of the fire. It is not yet clear whether the campsite can remain open to visitors now that the catering point has been destroyed.
