A fire broke out in the old school building of the Gertrudiscollege on Zundertseweg in Roosendaal on Wednesday evening. The fire brigade is present with two tank sprayers and an aerial platform. Firefighters are trying to get the fire under control. It is unknown how the fire started. It is also not clear whether anyone was injured.

Earlier in the evening, a report was received by the control room about an outside fire at the building. An hour and a half later, the alarm was raised again, this time for a fire inside. It was soon scaled up to a medium fire. According to a spokesperson for the Safety Region, this was done to get extra water on site.

The fire is said to have started in the gymnasium. At just before nine the fire was not yet under control.

Ready for demolition
The school building has not been in use for some time. It will be demolished to make way for apartments. On September 13, the building was said a festive farewell. The students of the college then moved to a completely renovated location elsewhere in the city. The old building would be exactly fifty years old next year.
