In the friendly against Oman, Niclas Füllkrug was the only goal scorer. He now had to sit out the first training session in Qatar. The reason: a flu infection.

Two days after arriving in Qatar, the DFB team trained for the first time at Al-Shamal SC’s stadium, which is to be used as a training ground during the World Cup. With temperatures around 30 degrees, 25 players were on the field in the morning – including the recently injured Thomas Müller and Antonio Rüdiger.

Only Niclas Füllkrug had to sit out the first team session. The Werder Bremen striker has a flu infection. How long he will be out is still unclear. “You can’t always make a clear forecast with things like this, we see how he’s doing hour by hour. But I think there’s enough time for him to be ready for the match day,” said DFB managing director Oliver Bierhoff. In conversation with team doctor Tim Meyer, “it didn’t sound that dramatic”.

After his national team debut and the first goal in the DFB jersey, there was speculation about Füllkrug’s starting eleven chances in the German team’s first World Cup game against Japan on Wednesday (2 p.m. live on ARD and on sportschau.de).

The players and officials of the German national team have high goals. How the team of national coach Hansi Flick is really prepared for the start of the tournament remains to be seen.
