Response to the stadium disaster, among other things
World governing body FIFA has withdrawn the U20 World Cup from Indonesia just under two months before the scheduled start of the tournament. This is a reaction to the current circumstances after the stadium disaster last October and the restructuring of the national association, FIFA announced on Wednesday. Before that, there had been a meeting between the head of the world association, Gianni Infantino, and the president of the Indonesian association (PSSI), Erick Thohir.
The world association had kept Indonesia as the host until the very end, the plan was for the tournament to take place from May 20th to June 11th with 24 teams. However, the German team did not qualify. A new host will be announced as soon as possible, the tournament dates remain unchanged, it said. Indonesia should have hosted the U20 World Cup in 2021, but it was canceled due to the corona pandemic. When it came to choosing the host, the Southeast Asian country prevailed over Peru.

A stadium disaster in Indonesia last October killed 135 people. After a meeting with Prime Minister Joko Widodo last year, Infantino promised that Indonesia would remain the host. At the same time, an office with FIFA employees was set up to help the association with its restructuring. We will continue to actively support this transformation process. “Members of the FIFA team will continue to have a presence in Indonesia in the coming months, providing the necessary support to the PSSI, led by President Thohir,” FIFA said.
