The reader of Iltalehti approached the editorial office. He had noticed in the store that the size of the Pirkka Best series Feta has decreased from 200 grams to 150 grams.
Has feta been a victim of a phenomenon called shrinkflation?
Shrinkflation means that the size of the product decreases, but the price remains the same.
Kesko’s communications report that Feta, which costs about three euros, has been found to be the most attractive option for many, even if the pack size is smaller.
– So the reason for the change in the size of the packaging was not the reason that the price of Feta had to be raised otherwise. The price of a piece was calculated to a level that, in our experience, is more pleasant to customers, and Kesko’s communications are answered by email.
According to Kesko, 150 grams is a more established weight in feta products.
There have been no similar changes in the other cheeses in the Pirkka series.
Kesko reports that decisions on packaging changes are always made on a product -by -product basis, on the basis of the estimated benefit and the need.
– In the coming months, changes in packaging size are coming to a few other products of our own brand. Categorically, we are not changing the packaging sizes of our products. Sometimes, of course, the prices of raw materials for a product, for example, have risen so strongly that by reducing the size of the packaging, it has been possible to avoid increasing the price of the product or at least to be considered more moderate.
So far, Kesko will not comment on which Pirkka products will receive new pack sizes.
The Consumer Association has been collecting for a few years On their website information about shrinkflation.
In its announcement, the Consumers’ Association points out that a reduction in packaging size does not mean hidden jerking.
– If the price really decreases in proportion to the size of the product, then the consumer will not disappear in the store, says the Consumer Association in the release.
