Fendi’s homage to the Roman woman

Don’t please others, but yourself: With this message, the Roman luxury label Fendi is sending women into the spring/summer 2024 season. The show on Wednesday afternoon was the first highlight of the Milan Fashion Week, which runs until Monday, with the latest creations from the Italian designer elite. Guests at the show included US actress Demi Moore and British models Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss.

Kim Jones found the model for his presented understanding of fashion in the Roman woman. “It has an elegance that comes from lightness,” explained the artistic director of Fendi’s women’s segment in the text accompanying the collection. “She doesn’t care what others think of her. And that is true luxury.”

In the show, he had the models parade down a catwalk lined with oversized handbags raised into statues. They presented fashion in soft tones with strong accents of orange, red or yellow. Long, flowing silhouettes alternate with striking geometric patterns and details in the collection, often grouped around the Fendi “F”. A key element is clothes that follow the contours of the body. Here and there, cutouts interrupt the closed shape. Casual shorts and feather-light coats underline the fresh, summery elegance of the collection. Rib-knit combinations add a fluffy touch. Finally, elements from men’s tailoring add subtle masculine accents.

Kim Jones has been designing Fendi’s women’s collections for around three years. His predecessor was Karl Lagerfeld, who held this position for 54 years until his death in February 2019. The official program of Milan Fashion Week includes around 60 major shows. Almost all the big names in Italian fashion are there. In the coming days, Prada, Versace and Giorgio Armani, among others, will be showing their latest women’s collections. The Gucci demonstration is awaited with particular excitement. A new creative director, Sabato De Sarno, will make his debut there on Friday. (dpa)
