When Alberto Núñez Feijóo fails on Friday in his attempt to achieve the investiture after winning the 23J elections, many of those who have led him to that dead end will accelerate the pressure to overthrow him. The smartest people in your own party won’t do it, starting with Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla or Isabel Díaz Ayuso. But that business media clique that needs to get to Moncloa no matter what, will try. Serious analysis error. Núñez Feijóo has won the first general elections in which he has stood. Something that neither Aznar nor Rajoy did at the time. He did it weeks after the PP had recovered a level of institutional power in city councils and autonomies that it had not had for five years. Why won’t Feijóo be president of the Government? Basically because the way they forced him to manage his pacts with Vox has disqualified him from finding any other partner despite his disposition and the moderation of his approaches. A change of candidate would only aggravate the problem, especially if we are heading towards a repeat election.

If we understand what the true reality of the PP is, Feijóo is the solution and not the problem as long as they let him do what he needs and do not take him into dead ends like when they forced him to force María Guardiola to hastily join forces with Vox in Extremadura. The PP needs to return to state politics which means understanding that politics is the result of agreements and not confrontation. And that begins by unblocking the renewal of constitutional bodies or by facing debates such as regional financing with another perspective than that of the community of Madrid. Moving forward internally in this necessary repositioning will be easier for Feijóo in the event of a repeat election than in the case of leading the opposition, but he will face a stronger adversary in the first case than in the second. There is a PP wounded by the victory of the PSOE in 2004 after 11-M, by Gürtel and by Bárcenas, by Sánchez’s refusal to vote for Rajoy and by the motion of censure that overthrew him. But politics is never made from wounds but rather from well-healed scars. And Feijóo knows that.
