Despite a few chances, the derby got into the race early in the game for Twente. The kick -off was already postponed for a while due to smoke development by the fireworks and after four minutes Robin Pröpper collided with an opponent. The Twente captain was treated for minutes before he had to be replaced with a head wound.
The long central defender was missed, when just before half -time at a corner kick Ivan Mesik was able to head in on behalf of Heracles. The visitors had slowly started playing better after a difficult start, also because Twente was very sloppy at times. Yet the opportunities had mainly been for the home team, especially through Ricky van Wolfswinkel.

Shortly after the break, Twente hit back in an almost identical way. It was Max Bruns who headed for the equalizer. A few minutes later, Sondre Ørjasæter already hit the bar. Twente continued to bang the door. That paid off six minutes before time. Thomas van den Belt shot great. A few minutes later, Bart van Rooij was sent off with red from the field, so Heracles had the chance to hunt the equalizer against ten men. Only big chances no longer got the Eredivisie.
