“It was a fighting victory”
Drama after extension: FC Bayern preserves playoff chance

A nerve -wracking evening keeps hope in life. The Bavarians wrestle red star Belgrade and keep the chance of the quarter -finals.
The FC Bayern basketball players fought for another final in the Play-in tournament of the Euroleague. The team of coach Gordon Herbert prevailed against Red Stern Belgrade on Tuesday evening with 97:93 (84:84, 39:46) after extra time and thus entered the next knockout. Real Madrid is waiting there on Friday evening.
For the Munich team, the way to the quarter -finals is still open – however, the prerequisite is an away win in Spain. After a convincing beginning of the season, the team had fallen out of the direct playoff ranks in the meantime and had to take the detour via the Play-in tournament.
The decision against Belgrade was only late: Nick Weiler-Babb became a hero in a gripping extension with a long pass over the entire field on Devin Booker. Booker put the end of the end with a dark 16 seconds before the end after the guests had not previously used several free throws. With 21 points, Booker was also the best thrower of Bayern.
Sub -player Niels Giffey then said when he was Magentasport: “I don’t even know what to think. It was a fight win as we hoped. That was not pretty.” Coach Gordon Herbert was also pleased: “Congratulations to our players. We never gave up.”
Towards the end of the first quarter, the Munich arena had started cooking for the first time about two hours earlier-but only because the numerous guest supporters cheered a 7-0 run from their team. Ex-national coach Herbert reacted with a break, but the people of Munich also had problems afterwards.
The fans were worried, among other things, because of the early three fouls by national players Andreas Obst and Johannes Voigtmann. The somewhat petty line of the referees played the guests into the cards – a later threesome from Booker led to the fact that the deserved Munich gap was only seven points at the break.
After the change of sides, Bayern increased significantly: they started a 17-2 run from a stable defensive and suddenly in the lead at the end of the third quarter with ten points. But Belgrade stayed tuned, and the final phase became dramatic: Carsen Edwards brought Munich shortly before the end with two points in front before a defensive error made it possible to compensate for the guests – the extension was the result.
