Franz Beckenbauer is given another honor. Despite lousy weather, many companions did not miss the ceremony to commemorate the German football “emperor”.
Franz Beckenbauer now has his own place in Munich. And not just any. FC Bayern and the city have set a permanent monument to its football legend: since May 5, 2025, the place around the Allianz Arena has officially had its name. Around 80 invited guests came to the inauguration of the Franz Beckenbauer-Platz 5-including family, former companions and club managers.
Widow Heidi Beckenbauer and son Joel took part in the ceremony together with club president Herbert Hainer. Hainer praised Beckenbauer as “unique” and recalled that it was “always unique to have Franz at his side”. Munich is beautiful – and thanks to Beckenbauer “world class”.
Franz Beckenbauer died on January 7, 2024 at the age of 78. As early as September 2024, the Munich city council decided to name the place in front of the stadium after the long -time player, coach and official of FC Bayern. The address of the arena changes symbolically-from Werner-Heisenberg-Allee 25 to Franz-Beckenbauer-Platz 5.
The association also honors its former captain in a different way: Beckenbauer’s rear number 5 is no longer awarded at Bayern. In addition, an oversized jersey with its name hangs under the stadium roof. Because of “his” number 5, the 5.5. 2025 as the day of unveiling for the street sign.
However, the weather presented itself little imperial this Monday. The unveiling took place in wet and cold weather and temperatures in the single -digit range. Nevertheless, many well-known personalities came to commemorate the legend-including Uli Hoeneß, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Sepp Maier, Paul Breitner, Klaus Augenthaler and Lothar Matthäus.
Immediately after the unveiling of the new address on the Esplanade, the invited company then went to the VIP area on the fourth floor of the arena. There Beckenbauer was again recognized in speeches by Hainer and Munich’s mayor Dieter Reiter.
Reiter described the “Emperor” as “greatest personality of FC Bayern Munich”, which had shaped German football like no other. Beckenbauer wrote sports history – as a player and as a coach. Reiter continued to say that he was “a guy that could not exist a second time and will not give it a second time”.
Hainer, who connects a close friendship with Beckenbauer for decades, also chose emotional words and spoke of “goosebumps”.
