FC Bayern: Farewell to Yann Sommer after the end of the season probably “almost certain” – 4 interested parties

Perspective at Bayern questionable

After six months, Yann Sommer and FC Bayern could part ways again. As the “Kicker” reports, a farewell to the 34-year-old goalkeeper in the summer is “almost certain”. The reason for this is the less promising perspective in Munich for the Swiss national keeper, who was hired as a replacement after the accident by Manuel Neuer.

Neuer is making great strides on his rehabilitation journey and if all goes to plan, should be back between the posts next season. The former Gladbach player wants to play with Switzerland at the 2024 European Championships in Germany – as number one in goal. He needs match practice for that. A role as a substitute goalkeeper behind Neuer, who also has the European Championship in mind with the German team, would not be helpful for Sommer.

According to the report, there are four interested parties from abroad for Sommer, who has a contract with the German record champions until 2025. Should Neuer return in his old strength, there is said to be a “gentlemen’s agreement” between the club and the player that he should go. The applicants are AS Monaco, Villarreal FC, Valencia FC and Leicester City. Accordingly, the Monegasques are looking for a replacement for Bayern loan Alexander Nübel, whose loan contract in the Principality expires at the end of the season. According to “L’Équipe”, there will be no firm commitment beyond that, and the deal with Munich does not include a purchase option anyway.

Villarreal gave away first-choice goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli to Ajax Amsterdam in the winter, and since then the 40-year-old veteran Pepe Reina has mostly played in goal, whose working paper ends. Giorgi Mamardashvili is set for Valencia. With a market value of 25 million euros, the 22-year-old is one of the top 15 most valuable goalkeepers in the world and was extremely popular last summer. At Leicester City, Sommer should wait for the end of the season to see whether the “Foxes” will hold up in class or have to go into second division. Danny Ward initially guarded the goal there before he was replaced by Daniel Iversen in mid-March.

Sommer came to Munich in the winter for €8m and has conceded 30 goals in 24 competitive games to date, while keeping eight clean sheets. Before moving to Bayern Munich, Manchester United was also an option, and according to “Bild” this interest should continue.
