FC Bayern coach: Nagelsmann’s dropouts bring unrest

Status: 02/21/2023 12:38 p.m

“Softened pack!” – After the Gladbach bankruptcy, Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann insulted the referees. It’s not his first misconduct. In the critical phase of the season, the coach’s behavior causes unwanted distraction.

Julian Nagelsmann is an emotional coach. FC Bayern has probably not had such a hot-blooded coach on the sidelines since Pep Guardiola. Carlo Ancelotti, Jupp Heynckes, Niko Kovac and Hansi Flick – they all sorted themselves into the more controlled characters on the hot-cold scale. Above all the Italian Ancelotti, whose emotional excitement could often only be read from the height of his eyebrow.

At the weekend Nagelsmann showed once again that he can be found at the other end of this spectrum. After 2:3 defeat against Gladbach deliver furious through the catacombs, banged on the door of the referee’s cabin to Tobias Welz and scolded loudly: “My God, my God. A washed-up pack!” The reason was the controversial red card against Dayot Upamecano.

Does Nagelsmann have to go to the stands against Union?

The DFB is therefore currently still investigating against the Bayern coach. A penalty is not yet known. If things go badly, Nagelsmann could miss the top game on Sunday, February 26, (From 5.30 p.m. on BR24Sport in the live report to listen to) against FC Union Berlin, who are tied on points, from the stands. It would be a big loss in a very important game, in a fundamental phase of the season.

The statements by referee boss Lutz Michael Fröhlich indicate that the DFB committee will not decide too mildly about Nagelsmann: “I find it profoundly disrespectful to use the term ‘Pack’. It doesn’t matter what perspective you have on a situation Then the understanding on the part of the referees is over,” said Fröhlich at Sport1. Nevertheless, a ban would be a very drastic measure. So far, well-known coaches have gotten away with payments of 1,000 to 10,000 euros for similar misconduct.

Nagelsmann’s statements are viewed increasingly critically

But even if Nagelsmann “only” gets away with a fine: the 35-year-old has brought unrest to the team. Once again, FC Bayern is in the headlines because of thoughtless statements. Internally, the recent “shark tank” metaphor had also caused astonishment. Public criticism of individual players – most recently of Leroy Sané and Jamal Musiala – is said not to have gone down well in the dressing room. The catacombs Ausraster in Gladbach should not necessarily smooth the waves.

At Hoffenheim: Nagelsmann meets a fan with a bottle

It’s not the first time he’s disrespected referees after games or hasn’t got his emotions under control. During the game against Borussia Mönchengladbach, the then 30-year-old was so annoyed that he threw a drinking bottle – and hit a spectator in the stands on the temple.

“I actually wanted to throw the bottle from the coaching zone into the wall. The neck of the bottle got stuck in my sleeve and slipped off. I apologized, of course that mustn’t happen,” he said at the time.

Seven times yellow for Nagelsmann – Baumgart with a negative value

No wonder Nagelsmann is one of the Bundesliga coaches who receive the most frequent warnings from officials. Since the rule change in the 2019/20 season that coaches can also be shown yellow, red or yellow-red, the referees have repeatedly exercised their right when Landsberger is on the sidelines. The football teacher has already seen seven yellow cards in his career.

He does not lead this negative statistic. Leipzig coach Marco Rose has already seen eleven yellow cards and one red card. Bo Svensson (FSV Mainz 05) received 14 yellow cards. Cologne coach Steffen Baumgart received 14 yellow cards and one yellow-red card.
