FC Barcelona want to further reduce salary costs: Are Alba and Pique going?

Sports reports

FC Barcelona won five of the first six competitive games of the new season and with the significant increase in the salary limit by LaLiga, further positive headlines were written at the weekend. According to a report by the Catalan newspaper, “Sports“The winter transfer window can be used. Then, according to reports, if the opportunity arises, other big earners should leave the club.

In addition to the Dutchmen Memphis Depay (28) and Frenkie de Jong (25), who would have received the release in the summer if an agreement had been reached on a transfer, the newspaper explicitly names the Barça legends Jordi Alba (33) and Gerard Piqué (35). Piqué has only featured once in the league this season, in the 4-0 win at Cádiz at the weekend, Alba only in the opening match against Rayo Vallecano (0-0).

With Andreas Christensen (26) and Jules Koundé (23) for Piqué’s position in the center of defence, as well as Marcos Alonso (31) on the left back and Álex Balde (18), who has been brought up from youth and is showing promising signs, there are newcomers to the team for both positions by coach Xavi. Alba’s and Piqué’s role is therefore seen primarily as representative, and in sporting terms they are successively outranked.

The fact that Depay did not leave in the summer was due to the fact that a move to Juventus did not materialize because, according to consistent reports, the Italians did not want to meet the striker’s salary requirements. De Jong was the main focus of Manchester United, but the clubs did not agree on a fee. Like Piqué, Depay played against Cádiz for the first time this season in the league. De Jong was on the pitch in every game, but oscillated between the starting XI and the bench.

Should these players leave Barcelona in the January transfer window, possibly especially in the case of the Dutch after a good World Cup, this would create further scope for the restructuring of the squad. Until then, the most important item on the agenda is the extension with top talent Gavi (18), which should only be a matter of time after Miralem Pjanic (32) left the United Arab Emirates. Bernardo Silva (28) from Manchester City was also traded to the Catalans until the end of the transfer.
