Marc-André Ter Stegen gets competition from FC Barcelona. Joan García’s obligation makes a farewell to the DFB goalkeeper more likely. Trainer Flick is still silent.
FC Barcelona has presented the first newcomer for the coming season: goalkeeper Joan García is moving from the city rival Espanyol to the “Blaugrana”. The 23-year-old receives a contract until 2031. This makes the future of Marc-André ter Stegen increasingly questioned among the Catalans.
The transfer had already been expected. The Chinese “Rastar Group”, majority owner of Espanyol, had made public at the weekend that Barça paid the exit clause of 26.3 million euros in full. Now the last formalities are also done.
On Friday, García will sign his contract in Barcelona – for six years until June 30, 2031. The Catalane -born dates from the youth of Espanyol and came to the club at the age of 15.
Last season García played all 38 league games. Espanyol ended up in 14th place in the end. With the Spanish U23, the goalkeeper in 2024 was also the Olympic champion. García had already celebrated his debut in La Liga in January 2022.
With the transfer, the question arises of ter Stegen’s future. In Spain, stubborn reports are held that the club wants to cut the long -standing goalkeeper from the list of salary. Accordingly, the pressure on those responsible is growing to comment on the goalkeeper situation.
National coach Julian Nagelsmann had recently publicly expressed that he would like a clear statement from Barcelona’s club management. Trainer Hansi Flick has not yet commented on the plans in the goalkeeper position. According to media reports, Galatasaray Istanbul is interested in the German national goalkeeper, the Turkish champion has recently hired Leroy Sané from FC Bayern.
