FC Barcelona asks the members if the club should become a Public Limited Company and there is a stir

He FC Barcelona is carrying out satisfaction studies in the form of online and telephone surveys of a sample of partners that is creating a considerable stir. Shortly after the financing plan for the Espai Barça that threatens to stress the club’s debt to the maximum, one of the issues of the questions referred to the ownership model. The question is the following: “Currently, Barça is 100% owned by the partners/Partners and important decisions must be approved in a general Assembly or in a referendum where everyone has a voice; In your opinion, which model would you prefer for FCB?”

In the five possible answers appears the one of the Sports Limited Company:

a) Better to continue as before with 100% ownership for Barça members.

b) It is better to choose to be a Sports Public Limited Company with shareholders.

c) Better a mixed model where at least 51% is from the partners/partners.

d) None of the previous models.

e) He doesn’t know.

This question is surprising because Joan Laporta, president of the entity, has always made a point of view that the ownership model is and must continue to belong to the partners. Also surprising is the inclusion of option C, the mixed model, which is that of Bayern Munich, often cited by some Barcelona opinion-makers.

“We will continue to maintain the governance model in which the members are the owners of the club”

Joan Laporta, president of Barça

In view of the noise generated, Laporta made reference to this at the press conference to present the financing plan for the Espai Barça this afternoon. “We will continue to maintain the government model in which the members are the owners of the club,” she stressed to remove doubts about the risks of the operation.

“There are 100 points and we have taken one of them,” said Eduard Romeu, Barça’s economic vice president. “This operation allows us to shield this governance model, I am a partner and I have received this survey. I am aware, whoever does not believe in this governance model is superfluous on the board”; the leader said. “Investors have positively valued the club model we have”, added Maribel Meléndez, corporate director of the Barça club, alluding to the response they have received from the 20 investors from the ‘Espai Barça’
