The fans of the 1. FC Cologne were silent at the start of the home game against Union Berlin on Saturday afternoon. The reason was a medical emergency in the south curve, and there was a medic on duty in the stands around kick-off. The away fans joined in after a few minutes and also remained silent for the time being.
After a good quarter of an hour, the Cologne ultras started loudly. At the same time, the club announced: “Apparently the affected fan is feeling better again and is no longer in a critical condition.”

1. FC Cologne meets Union Berlin with coach Steffan Baumgart on Saturday. The former FC coach is coming to Cologne for the second time since leaving the Billy Goats. Baumgart was released on December 21, 2023 after he lost with FC at Union Berlin the day before. Two years later, exactly to the day, both teams meet again – with Baumgart in the coaching bench at Union.
Lukas Kwasniok is looking forward to seeing Baumgart again, whom the current FC coach once inherited from SC Paderborn. “I found it remarkable how Baumi handed me the baton in Paderborn,” said Kwasniok on Thursday. “He took his time and told me his point of view. That made it easier for me. I’m looking forward to seeing him again because he has his heart in the right place and is an emotional guy.”
