A cycling race in Australia ended in a mass crash on Saturday evening. This had serious consequences for a viewer.
There was a serious accident at a Tour Down Under race in Adelaide on Saturday. In the men’s classic sprint race there was a mass crash in the last corner. Numerous drivers crashed into the barriers, knocking several spectators to the ground. A woman suffered serious injuries and is currently being treated in hospital, the organizers announced on Sunday.
South Australian Prime Minister Peter Malinauskas expressed dismay at the event in local media, calling it a “terrible, freak accident”. According to Malinauskas, the spectator suffered “several serious injuries.”
In terms of sport, Sam Welsford (Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe) was pleased with his victory in the sprint race. This race is considered a prologue to the six stages of the Tour Down Under, which begins on Tuesday and is part of the UCI World Tour. There are also six German drivers among the participants in the peloton, including Phil Bauhaus and Nikias Arndt (both Bahrain Victorious) as well as Georg Zimmermann (Intermarché-Wanty).
In the women’s race, the Swiss Noemi Rüegg secured overall victory on Sunday in the already completed three-stage race.
