Herber setback for Egan Bernal: The former Tour-de France winner from Colombia fell on Monday at the Clásica Jaén Paraíso Interior Closing Rent in southern Spain and suffered a broken collarbone.

Bernal (28) was taken to the hospital, and his team Ineos Grenadiers then announced the diagnosis in the evening. Bernal’s teammate Michal Kwiatkowski secured the victory.

“I felt really strong and of course I am sad that I fell”Bernal is quoted on the website of his team: “At the same time, the feeling that I had during the race gave me a lot of self -confidence and motivation to continue working hard, because the season is still very long.”

Starting at the Giro planned

How long Bernal will fail is not yet known. “Our team doctor is currently with him and we will give an update in due course”said Ineos on social media. Originally, he had planned to start the Tirreno-Adritico (March 10th to 16th) and the Giro (May 9th to June 1st) in Italy at the one-day race Strade Bianche (March 8).

First successes 2025 after serious accident

Only ten days earlier, Bernal, who won the tour in 2019 and also won the Giro d’Italia in 2021, triumphed at the Colombian championships in the street race and in time trial, and thus celebrated the first successes since his almost fatal training accident around three years ago. Bernal had crashed into a standing bus at the time, eight months later he gave his comeback.
