FA Cup: Manchester City beat Southampton – Everton endure debacle at Crystal Palace

FA Cup

The English champions Manchester City are in the semi-finals of the FA Cup. The team of star coach Pep Guardiola, who last won the cup three years ago, prevailed 4-1 (1-1) in the quarter-finals on Sunday at league rivals FC Southampton, who are coached by former Leipzig coach Ralf Hasenhüttl.

Raheem Sterling (12th minute), Kevin De Bruyne (62nd) with a penalty, Phil Foden (75th) and Riyad Mahrez (78th) shot the “Citizens” into the next round. A professional from Man City also scored the goal for the hosts. An own goal by Aymeric Laporte (45+2) led to an equalizer for Southampton.

Everton FC had previously experienced a cup debacle at Crystal Palace. Coach Frank Lampard’s relegation-threatened team, 17th in the Premier League table, lost 4-0 (2-0) in London and can now devote themselves entirely to the fight to stay up in the league.

Champions League winners FC Chelsea had already moved into the semi-finals of the cup competition on Saturday. The club world champion from London, who is up for sale and has been subjected to severe sanctions by the British government because of its Russian owner Roman Abramovich, had won 2-0 (2-0) at second division club FC Middlesbrough. Romelu Lukaku (15th) and Hakim Ziyech (31st) scored for the team coached by Thomas Tuchel.
